Chapter 1
The pen in my hand feels heavy as I sign the final piece of paperwork, making me the official owner of a new red Mustang V-8 convertible. I can't believe it's happening.
"Goodbye, clunker," I say, unable to hide my relief at finally ditching my old car. I sign over the title to the dealership so they can “deal” with it. I’m smiling from ear to ear as the manager hands me the keys to my new ride. I hand him the title to my old one.
"It was one headache after another. I'm just glad I don't have to put another dollar into that thing,” I tell him.
"Congratulations on your new vehicle, Katy! It’s one hell of a machine. You be careful in it," he beams, matching my enthusiasm.
"Thank you so much! I’ll be extra careful, at least at first," I say with a wink.
I grip the two sets of keys tightly in my hand. As grateful as I am for this new car, I can't help but think about my grandmother. If it weren't for her generous inheritance, I wouldn't be able to afford a set of wheels like this. I’ve been super frugal about my inheritance, but I could not tolerate my old, broken down car another week.
I can almost hear Nana’s voice telling me not to feel guilty. She would want me to enjoy life and not worry so much about the future. “Just go find you a rich husband!” That’s what she would say. My Nana worked so hard after my grandfather died. They were not rich, but she managed to save a large nest egg and sock away money into investments. Sometimes out of the blue, she would look at me with a more serious expression and say, “Remember, it’s just as easy to fall in love with someone who is rich than poor.”
Thinking of her now makes this vehicle purchase bittersweet, but I know she would want me to embrace this moment and make the most of it.
As I settle into the driver's seat and adjust the mirrors, something tugs at me inside. It’s an excitement that is larger than buying a brand spanking new car. It’s like a fresh start — one I've been yearning for.
With a bit of nervous hesitation, I phone my insurance agent to make sure the new car is covered. While I sit idling, waiting for someone to answer, I am absolutely oozing happiness about this Mustang. I can’t wait to show it to everyone.
Sunlight plays off the hood of the sleek red exterior and the powerful engine purrs as I idle. The sound is a perfect blend of low growls and throaty revs, giving me an adrenaline rush just from sitting in the driver's seat.
Once again, my eyes take in the leather seats and the modern interior design, from the digital display to the chrome accents throughout. The steering wheel feels firm and responsive in my grip, and I can't wait to take this beauty out on the open road.
“Hi, this is JoAnn with Linx Insurance. How can I help you?” “Hey JoAnn, it’s Katy Thomas. I’m sitting in my new car and I just want to make sure it’s covered before I start driving.”
I hear her smiling through the phone. “You’re good to go, Katy. Thank you for your business and enjoy your new vehicle.”
“I will. Thank you for all your help and getting everything done so quickly.”
I feel the power under my foot as I press down on the gas pedal, causing the car to lurch forward. I quickly let off a little, getting used to the amount of pressure needed to get this powerful pony rolling down the road.
As I pull into a parking space in front of the hair salon, I can already see my coworkers coming toward the window to see what just drove up and who is behind the driver’s wheel. I told them I was going to be late because I was getting another car. I’m sure they had no idea it would be this.
Daisy squeals with excitement as she runs outside to take a closer look. "Wow, Katy! This is amazing!" she exclaims, running her hand along the shiny red exterior. “I think I need a lift somewhere.”
"I know, right? It's a total upgrade from my old clunker," I reply, feeling proud.
Jade walks over, eyeing the car with a little envy. "Lucky you," she mutters under her breath, clearly wishing it was her behind the wheel. Jade’s always thinking only others get something good — never her. I wish she would get over that kind of thinking.
Molly appears next, a mischievous glint in her eye. "Can I borrow it this weekend?" she asks slyly.
I laugh and shake my head. "Sorry Molly, not this time. Maybe once you get your driver's license," I tease. As the work day progresses and I work beautifying several clients. I keep an eye on my new wheels almost the entire time. Strangely, it’s almost like having a new pet or something to worry about. I’ll have to get over that. My co-workers are still talking about my new car while I clean up my workstation for the day.
After work, I take a long drive around town. The wind in my hair and the purr of the engine makes me feel alive and free. It's like Nana is with me in spirit, encouraging me to live life to the fullest.
I miss her dearly. Owning this car is a reminder that she is still taking care of me even after she’s gone. And I will make sure to honor her by living life boldly and as wisely as possible.
Starving, I pull into the parking lot of my favorite fast food and go inside, keeping a watchful eye on my new wheels, especially since I’m leaving the top down. My phone buzzes with an email notification. Glancing down, I see the subject line:
"Exclusive Opportunity: Discounted Room Rate at Grand View Lodge!"
My eyes widen as I read the details – a luxurious room with breathtaking mountain views, all at a price I could actually afford. This is exactly the escape I need right now. But where is it?
Reading on, the lodge is located in the Colorado Rockies above the quaint town of Cady Springs. It seems idyllic but I don’t want to go alone. This would be a perfect trip for my best friend and I to enjoy. Anna needs to get out of town and the upcoming fourth of July weekend would be good timing. I always knew Matt was a player and would not work out as husband material. I can’t believe the way he fucked her over with some girl he didn’t even know.
Anna needs this reset and so do I.
"Wow, this could be amazing," I whisper to myself, feeling a surge of excitement coursing through me. I make up my mind in an instant – it's time for a spontaneous adventure. And what better way to kick it off than with a new car and an incredible destination? I'm ready to leave troubles behind, embrace freedom, and create some unforgettable memories. So, without hesitation, I book the vacation.
"Colorado, here we come." I can hardly contain my excitement as I dial Anna's number, the phone pressed against my ear.
"Hey, it's me," I say when she answers. "You won't believe what just happened. Are you ready for a getaway?"
"Katy? What's going on?" Anna asks, her voice filled with curiosity.
"I just bought a new car – a red Mustang convertible – and I got an amazing deal on a room at the Grand View Lodge in Cady Springs, Colorado. It's time for us to hit the road and leave everything behind for a while. Pack your bags, girl, because we’re going away for the holiday weekend."
“Katy, this is short notice … I don’t know.”
“Did you have plans for the fourth of July?”
“No, not really.”
“Alright then, take a chance and let’s get out of town.” She’s silent, thinking and hesitating.
Suddenly, Anna says, “I guess I better do laundry and figure out what to take.”
Anna is never ready to do anything impulsively, but it isn’t hard for me to talk her into the trip. She needs this adventure and so do I.
3 days later
As I pull up to Anna's apartment, she’s standing outside, her suitcase next to her, a smile lighting up her face. She does a double-take when she sees my new ride.
"Katy, this car is amazing!" she exclaims, her eyes wide with admiration. "Your grandmother would be proud to see you driving this beauty."
"Thanks, Anna. I wish I could take her for a ride in it," I reply. We load her suitcase into the trunk and hop in, our spirits high as we take off on our big BFF adventure.
"Let's do this," I say, revving the engine before pulling away from the curb.
Anna checks out the interior of the car, looking in the glove compartment, inside the console, checking out the backseat. “How long will it take us to get there?” she asks.
“According to my phone, we are nine hours and thirty-four minutes from the lodge.”
“Wow, it’s a full day of driving.”
“Yes it is. That’s why I wanted to leave so early.”
“Okay, put on some music Katy. Let’s get this party underway.”
We drive through scenic landscapes, the wind whipping through our hair as we sing along to some of our favorite songs. The sense of freedom and adventure washes over us, chasing away any lingering doubts about this being the best thing we could do right now.
As we leave the flatter topography of Oklahoma and Kansas, the scenery changes.
"Look at those mountains," Anna says, pointing at the majestic peaks in the distance. "I've never seen anything so beautiful."
"Me neither," I agree, my heart swelling with gratitude for this opportunity to escape with my best friend. "This trip is going to be unforgettable."
We laugh and chat as we continue our journey, the open road stretching out before us like an invitation to embrace life to the fullest. Before we know it, we see the Welcome sign for Cady Springs, Colorado.
“Woo hoo,” I yell at the wind. Anna laughs at me. I can't help but feel that something magical awaits.
"Hey, Katy," Anna says suddenly, pointing out the window. "Isn't that a carnival in the distance?"
"Looks like it," I reply, squinting to see through the fading sunlight. "And check out that sign ahead: Cowboy Yard Sale."
"That sounds interesting," Anna says, her eyes widening with curiosity. "What do you think they're selling? Old cowboy boots and lassos? Biggest yard sale I’ve ever seen."
"Maybe we can even buy ourselves a real cowboy!" I joke, winking at her. "A tall one with muscles for days."
"Ooh, now we're talking!" Anna giggles, clearly enjoying our playful fantasy. "But seriously, we should check it out. It could be a fun way to kick off our Cady Springs adventure."
"Absolutely," I agree. "Let's make a point to stop by the Cowboy Yard Sale tomorrow. Right now, they’re holding our reservation at the Grand Lodge."
