Daring With The Mountain Man (Author's Notes)

When I first started working on Daring With The Mountain Man, I knew I wanted it to feel like summer — lake water, mountain air, warm skin after a day in the sun, and that delicious little thrill of doing something you never expected yourself to do. But as Layla and Hudson’s story unfolded, it became about more than cliff jumping and summer heat.

Layla is a woman who has lived safely for a long time. She has loved deeply, lost quietly, and built a life around being useful, reliable, and needed. After divorce, she arrives at Eight Pines Lakeside Cabins believing she is only taking a vacation.

Instead, she finds herself standing on the edge of a cliff. And then she meets Hudson.

Hudson is younger, rugged, competent, and completely comfortable with a life that moves with the seasons. He knows cliffs, storms, trails, ropes, and lake water. What he does not expect is Layla — a woman who looks at his wandering life and sees freedom instead of failure.

I loved writing the contrast between them. Layla has spent years believing safe was supposed to be enough. Hudson has spent years believing leaving was the only way to stay himself. Neither one of them expects to find someone who understands the tender place underneath those choices.

This book also became a story about bravery, but not the loud kind. It's a quieter kind. The kind that says yes while still scared. The kind that lets someone see the part of you that still hurts.

Sometimes we hide so well that we even hide from our own truth. Then someone comes along and reflects it back to us. Not by forcing us to change, but by making us wonder what might happen if we finally stopped shrinking away from the life we secretly wanted.

Then it becomes decision time. Because living free and truly feeling alive often requires change. And Lord knows, change can be hard.

Bravery chooses the untraveled road. The porch light in the distance. The next season. Maybe even a life that looks different from the one you thought you were allowed to want.

At its heart, Daring With The Mountain Man is a feel-good summer romance about taking one brave leap, trusting the person waiting below, and discovering that love does not have to feel like a cage.

Sometimes, love feels like freedom. And sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is follow the summer where it takes you.

Thank you so much for reading Layla and Hudson’s story.
